Florida's Lighthouses
There are 31 lighthouses that are located on Florida's 1,350 miles of coastline. These are our favorites in no particular order.
St. Augustine Lighthouse
St.Augustine Lighthouse (pictured above) is the oldest permanent navigational aid in all of North America, as it dates back to the 1500s, when the Spanish first built a watchtower there. The lighthouse that stands today is 165 feet above sea level, as is one of the talest lighthouses in Florida. The site is open to the public and features a gift shop in the keeper's house, and beautifil nature trails.
Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse
Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse which is located at Ponce Inlet Florida was first built in 1883. At 175 feet tall Ponce Inlet Lighthouse is Florida's tallest lighthouse, and one of the tallest lighthouses in the United States. Daytona Beach can be seen from from the top of it. Open to the public, and it has a gift shop.
Pensacola Lighthouse
Pensacola Lighthouse is actually located on the property of the Pensacola Naval Air Station. The lighthouse which was built in 1859 stands 159 feet tall, making it one of the tallest lighthouses in the state. The Richard C. Callaway Maritime Museum is housed in the keeper's quarters. Open to the public, since it is on a miltary base though, you will need proper I.D.s to enter the base.
Cape Florida Lighthouse
Cape Florida Lighthouse is located in Key Biscayne Florida, on the grounds of Bill Baggs Florida State Park. Cape Florida Lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County, as it dates back to 1825. It is open to the public and contains a museum in the replica of the keeper's house.
Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse
A beautiful coral colored structure Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse (pictured below) stands 108 feet tall. It was built in 1860, and was designed by George Meade, who later was the general of the union army before U.S. Grant was appointed at that position. Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is open to the public, and contains a museum and gift shop in the keeper's house.
